One of the biggest reasons for the incredible surge in popularity of poker in the United States was the interest generated by the appearanceof the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. Slick production values combined with the first use of hole card cameras on American television made this show a smash hit. Currently in its third season, the second season DVD set of this series is now available.

The WPT Second Season DVD set contains a total of eight discs. The first seven each contain two episodes of the show, ranging from the Legends of Poker at the Bike to the WPT Championship at the Bellagio. Without commercials, each show runs about an hour and a half, so for $45 one gets about 21 hours of poker action. It’s my opinion that this is a remarkable value for the money.

Four of the shows contain secondary audio tracks recorded by noted poker professionals who participated in these events. Two of these are fairly entertaining commentaries by Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari. Two others are recorded by Daniel Negreanu and Erick Lindgren. Of the commentaries, I found the commentary by Negreanu and Lindgren recorded over the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure event that was won by Gus Hansen to provide the most poker insight. I feel that the other three are somewhat fun, but unspectacular.

Disc eight contains bonus material, including an aggregation of the Poker Corner tips that are sprinkled throughout each show, profiles of several well-known players, a short behind-the-scenes look at the popularity of poker among Hollywood celebrities, and the expanded Poker Corner special that is sort of a post-game show about the WPT Championship event. Of these extras, I really liked the expanded Poker Corner special with tournament analysis by Annie Duke, Phil Hellmuth, and Daniel Negreanu. It’s my opinion that the insights provided by these skilled players is the best thing the WPT has yet produced, and I wish this had become a regular feature on the Travel Channel. I a great deal of good poker insight in this show, and I believe it is well worth watching.

The packaging of these DVDs is slick and the video quality is excellent. This is a wellexecuted product, and it’s easy to understand why the WPT is widely considered to be the premier poker show on television. I believe that “World Poker Tour — Season 2″ is poker entertainment at its finest, and is an excellent value for the money. I recommend this DVD set to poker aficionados of all stripes. -Nick Christenson
