Brits and Pieces from Europe

I had hoped to bring you an update from the William Hill Grand Prix here in Cardiff (capitol of Wales) - however, it seems that we all have to stay hush until the program has been aired in December. But one thing that they can’t stop me from disclosing, is William Hill’s generosity and incredible commitment to poker and to the poker player.
Apart from adding a cool $200K to the prize money - they have gone out of their way to bring a few of the US stars over to the event. So what have William Hill received in return? Well….no doubt that they have put together one of the strongest ever fields for a UK televised event. But more than that - they have received the respect of every player in the event - as well as from the poker community in general. And as for the poker play? This structure is just so unique for television. 100K in chips and 25-50 blinds has given the players a chance to finally play poker on TV as it should it be played. So, rather than the raise and re-raise showdowns that we often see - we have situations where players actually get to set up some great plays.
Away from the studio - William Hill’s generosity continued in to the early hours with a never-ending stream of hospitality on offer. At one such occasion - Phil Laak and Antonio the magician charmed the dinner party with non-stop banter, stories and card tricks. By the end of the night (or more like five in the morning) - it had become clear that any pre-conceived ideas that anyone obtained through television about Phil or Antonio, had been truly dispelled. In fact, the guys from William Hill could not have been more delighted with the pair of them. Goodjob guys!
As for televised poker here in Europe - it has grown beyond belief. In fact, William Hill even has its own channel on Sky! Makes you wonder as to why some of the bigger online operators have not followed in this direction? And as for online poker - its amazing how many new operators are lining up to launch. Believe it or not, this includes the biggest national daily NEWSPAPER here in the UK! Who next - New York Times poker?
Meanwhile, back in the USA……I see that Dan Harrington came close with a second place in the WPT at the Bellagio. I must confess to being a very big fan of Dan’s play. He has somehow managed to grow and change with the game. Gone is the super tight image that Dan used to use to great effect in the past. In its place, we have a new Dan that is willing and very able to mix it with the best of them. He even makes me want to gamble more!
I also note that Gavin Smith took third in the event. Again, I must admit that I have been very impressed with his performances over the last year or so. And though it goes without saying his results at the last WSOP were awesome - it was his many near misses that showed just how consistent he has been. Can’t wait to get back and play with these boys!
While on the subject - I shall be back to the US very soon. So, to anyone that owes me money… see you at Foxwoods. To those I owe… I just hope you don’t read this article!
Until next time - play well, get lucky and adapt like Dan!
