In the past, legendary women such as Calamity Jane and Poker Alice played major roles in Deadwood’s colorful history. In keeping with that spirit, Rosie Paules of Torrington, Wyoming carved out her place in Deadwood history as the first woman to win the Deadwood Shootout.

Rosie’s cool, calm and consistent play throughout the tournament was a key factor as she battled her way through a field of 202 regional and local players to capture first place and top prize money of $30,665 from a total prize pool of $97,974.

Spread out over three action-packed days and four poker rooms, the final round commenced on Sunday, May 20, with half the field playing on Friday and the other half on Saturday at the participating Deadwood poker rooms: The Gold Dust, The Lucky Nugget, Cadillac Jacks and the Saloon No. 10. The top three players from each room on Friday and Saturday went on to the finals on Sunday at Saloon No.10.

A strong field of young guns and grizzled veterans showed up at high noon to start the final day’s action at the Saloon No.10, which is famous for its sawdust covered floors and hot poker action. Wild West shoot ‘em up action began with the first hand, resulting in nearly half of the field busting out within the first 2 hours.

The final table line up was made up of strong players from Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota. Sixth place and $4,801 went to another woman who played extremely well, Angel Hamm of Rapid City, SD. Fifth place and $6,074 went to Del Spronk of Edgerton MN. Fourth place and $7,348 went to Shane Parks of Casper Wyo. Third place and $10,287 went to “your friend and mine” Bob Goodrich of Spearfish SD. Second place and $17,145 went to Mike Rath of Spearfish SD.

First place with $30,665 and the coveted “Deadwood Shootout Champion” gold-plated silver coin with two-quarter carat diamonds inlayed went to Rosie Paules. The top three players battled it out for over and hour, with Rosie taking the chip lead from Bob, and trying to pit Bob against Mike. With Bob and Mike playing well and staying alive thru a couple of all-ins, Rosie finally took Bob out when he made a pre flop raise and Rosie went all-in. Bob called. Rosie beat Bob’s A-5 by catching a Queen to pair her A-Q. A few hands later she took Mike Rath out too. Rath had gone all in with K-Q and Rosie called with A-J. The flop, turn, and river were all blanks and Rosie won the tournament with ace-high. Congratulations to Rosie who rode off into the sunset with a saddlebag of cash and her prize possession, her “Deadwood Shootout Champion” card protector.

The Deadwood Tournament Directors Association and the participating poker houses thank all the players and dealers who made this tournament another remarkable event for historic Deadwood.
