Bagging a Buck
Bonnie Demos
The rapidly approaching, annual Midwestern phenomenon known as deer hunting season looms before us. Historically, every November hundreds of thousands of men armed with an arsenal of weapons make their yearly pilgrimage to our abundant, serene northern woodlands and forests in hope of bagging a buck.
Two distinct demographic groups comprise this seasonal event: deer hunters, and what is commonly known as the deer hunter’s widow. Both groups have developed their own unique set of rituals over the years, which have become deeply ingrained in the Midwestern culture. Although a small percentage of women have joined the guys, deer hunting remains a male dominated sport. The reasons for this are not because we cannot wield a weapon, sit in a tree for hours on end, or even that the idea of stray bullets whizzing past our heads frightens us. Women are actually quite capable of participating in this sport.
In my opinion, the underlying cause is obvious; blaze orange, the predominant color of deer hunting apparel, is truly heinous and impossible to accessorize. That issue clarified, what exactly do women do during this yearly hiatus?
In ancient times, they had immersed themselves in domestic pre-holiday activities such as baking cookies, giving the house a thorough cleaning, and bravely battling throngs of fellow widows at overcrowded holiday craft bazaars. Fortunately, times have changed, and yes, we have come a long way baby! Women of all ages across the Midwest have adopted a new mantra, “Let the doughboy do the cookies, it’s party time!”
Area casinos have done their best to attract this sudden surge of females by offering a tantalizing array of special weekend packages, entertainment and poker tournaments just for us “widows.”
Ladies if you already enjoy live poker or have wanted to try it, this is the perfect opportunity to get into the game.
Deer Hunter’s Widow Get-Away Packages are offered at numerous area casinos, and this year promises hotter action than ever before. Poker rooms have added special ladies poker tournaments to their venues as well as sweetening the pot by bringing in male strippers for entertainment. Holiday craft bazaars will also be on-premise at some casinos, which would even make grandma happy, so bring her along!
Menominee Resort and Casino located in Keshena, WI may prove to be one of the top spots to be this year. Lil Duquaine, Table Games Manager, has cooked up a very special weekend of scorching men and sizzling poker from November 16-17. She knows what we want! Las Vegas’ hottest export, The Men of Playgirl, kick off the weekend festivities with two spicy, hunky, live performances on Friday evening. The action continues on Saturday with a ladies only no-limit Texas hold’em tournament.
