Several weeks ago our publisher, Mr. Stanley Robert Sludikoff, presented me with an AMAZING project.
“Asof November 2007, Poker Player Newspaper will be celebrating 25 years of publication.”
Twenty five years ago feels is like a lifetime ago for me. I was in grade school then, probably begging Mama to stay home from school. And as usual it fell upon deaf ears because my Mama is a very strong believer in education. I’d have to have a great reason and or excuse to convince her to stay home. And as we all know it’s very hard to trick your mother because mommy’s have an inherent radar that cannot and will not be compromised unless it’s in the best interest of their children.
But I give both my parents credit for letting me play poker at a very young age with my older brothers because they’ve always believed it is a game just as respectable as chess…
Wow, twenty-five years ago, where were you?
As I started reading these classic issues from 1982, which is only a quarter of a century ago, it may as well have been from a hundred years ago because, boy oh boy, how poker has evolved over just a few decades. There are crash courses in five card draw-a game many still play at home games, including me- seven-card stud advice, limit and no-limit Texas hold’em techniques, tournament strategies, and much, much more…
The writers included Doyle Brunson, Stu Jacobs, Bobby Baldwin, Tex Sheahan, Rex Jones, Michael Wiesenberg, Mike Caro, and David Sklansky.
There’s a plethora of advice from legendary players and writers that’s very educational, entertaining and exciting to read. It’s so invigorating to read because it seems more like a century ago rather than just twentyfive years. It feels like John Wayne’s era, uncanny, the issues sing to me songs like “The Wild, Wild West.”
Trust me; you will love them! These writers/players are the original pioneers; they express a sea of wisdom and advice…
They are some of the most innovative and powerful players/writers of all time and we will have the honor of reading their thoughts from twenty-five- -years ago …
In these time pieces there’s news from way back when poker wasn’t so commercialized. It’s interesting to see how different journalism was then compared with the news we hear presently. There wasn’t any internet news then, because online poker did not exist. There’s a beauty in that. It’s refreshing, and the way reporting was intended to be. Please don’tget me wrong, technology has plenty of good qualities, but you must admit at times that too much information, coming from all different directions, may hinder the authenticity of the press and exquisite journalism.
There are ads from some casinos that still exist and some that do not. Just seeing them is like taking a pleasant stroll down memory lane.
With the help of our publisher, Mr. Sludikoff, our web geniuses Joseph Smith, John Thompson and yours truly, we will be posting these invaluable past issues-time pieces if you will-beginning this November. There will be a bi-weekly summary of each past issue printed in Poker Player and the entire issues will be online in PDF format.
Are you ready to experience the wild, wild past? I know I am. I’m so excited and I promise you will be too.
